The United Kingdom is one of the world's largest economies and a major global trading nation, having left the EU customs union and single market following Brexit in January 2021. Trade with the UK now requires customs declarations, rules of origin compliance, and adherence to UK-specific regulatory standards distinct from EU requirements. The UK has been actively negotiating independent free trade agreements with countries including Australia, Japan, and is pursuing accession to the CPTPP.
Since January 1, 2021, the UK is outside the EU customs union and single market. Goods traded between the UK and EU now require full customs declarations, tariff assessments based on rules of origin, and compliance with separate UK regulatory standards.
The TCA provides for zero tariffs and zero quotas on goods that meet the applicable rules of origin requirements. Goods that do not meet origin criteria may still be subject to tariffs.
The UK's top exports include machinery, vehicles, pharmaceuticals, and financial services, while major imports include machinery, vehicles, fuels, and consumer goods.
