Taiwan is a major US trading partner and a critical node in global semiconductor and electronics supply chains. The US and Taiwan do not have a formal free trade agreement, but the two sides launched the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade in 2022 to negotiate trade facilitation and other commercial issues. Taiwan is the world's leading producer of advanced semiconductors, and US imports from Taiwan are dominated by integrated circuits, machinery, and electronics.
There is no comprehensive FTA between the US and Taiwan. The US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade, launched in 2022, has produced agreements on customs administration and trade facilitation, with negotiations ongoing on additional chapters.
The leading US imports from Taiwan are semiconductors and integrated circuits, computers and peripherals, communications equipment, machinery, and plastics. Taiwan's TSMC and other chipmakers are critical suppliers to US technology companies.
Taiwan is generally treated favorably under US export control regulations and is included in Country Group A:1 under the EAR, allowing access to many controlled items without a license. However, exporters must still screen for end-use and end-user concerns.
