Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia bordered by Russia and China, making overland trade routes critical to its import and export activity. The economy is heavily driven by mineral exports, particularly copper, coal, and gold, with China absorbing the vast majority of its outbound trade. US trade with Mongolia is limited but includes machinery, vehicles, and consumer goods.
Mongolia's exports to the US are relatively modest and include cashmere and wool products, animal hides, and some mineral commodities. The bulk of Mongolia's mineral exports flow to China rather than the US.
The US and Mongolia have a bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in place. Mongolia also benefits from the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which allows certain Mongolian goods to enter the US duty-free.
Mongolia's lack of sea access means all goods must transit through China or Russia, adding significant freight costs and transit time. Most US-bound exports are routed through Chinese ports, primarily Tianjin.
