U.S. Trade with Eritrea

Eritrea is subject to US targeted sanctions administered by OFAC, and the broader geopolitical environment — including past UN Security Council sanctions — creates elevated compliance risk. US companies must screen all counterparties against the OFAC SDN list and relevant export-control lists, and should obtain a legal opinion on whether the specific transaction is permissible before proceeding. General licenses do not broadly authorize commercial trade with Eritrea.

Eritrea holds significant mineral resources, including gold deposits and one of the world's largest potash reserves at the Colluli project. These are of potential interest to the mining, fertilizer, and precious-metals sectors. However, given the current sanctions environment and limited banking connectivity, US buyers in these sectors typically monitor Eritrea as a future supply source rather than an active procurement origin at this time.
