Heading 8502 covers complete electric generating sets, which combine a prime mover (such as a diesel or gas engine) with an alternator in a single unit. Heading 850162 applies to the alternator alone, imported without its prime mover. If an alternator arrives mounted to an engine on a common base frame and is presented as a functional generating set, CBP will typically classify the entire assembly under 8502 rather than splitting the components.

As of current trade-remedy orders, India and Singapore are not subject to Section 301 tariffs (which target Chinese-origin goods) or Section 232 measures applicable to electric generators in this category. However, antidumping or countervailing duty orders are product- and country-specific and can be initiated at any time.
