To claim a wind-power-specific line, importers typically need manufacturer documentation confirming the alternator is designed and intended for use in wind power generating sets classified under HTS 8502.31.00. A general-purpose alternator of the same KVA rating would fall into the non-specific (NES) lines. CBP may request engineering specifications or purchase orders confirming end-use.

The heading is subdivided into three output tiers — 750 KVA to 10,000 KVA, 10,001 KVA to 40,000 KVA, and above 40,000 KVA — each with separate 10-digit HTS lines. For large utility or hydro alternators, the rated output on the manufacturer's nameplate or test certificate is the controlling figure. Importers of multi-unit shipments should verify each unit's rating individually, as a single shipment may contain units spanning more than one tariff line.
