Sesame Seeds

Under the FASTER Act of 2021, sesame became the ninth major food allergen recognized by FDA, effective January 1, 2023. Importers supplying sesame seeds to US food manufacturers or retailers must ensure that downstream labeling complies with FDA allergen declaration requirements. FDA may also scrutinize import entries for compliance with food safety standards under FSMA.

Certified-organic sesame seeds (1207400010) must be accompanied by a valid USDA NOP organic certificate or documentation under a recognized NOP equivalency arrangement. Without proper organic certification, the shipment must enter under the conventional line (1207400090), which can affect pricing and downstream marketing claims for the importer's customers.
