Misidentification can result in reclassification and potential duty adjustments, so accurate species labeling on commercial invoices is important.

The International Pacific Halibut Commission sets annual catch limits for Pacific halibut in US and Canadian waters. Once quotas are reached, the directed fishery closes, which can sharply curtail fresh product availability later in the season. Importers relying on fresh Pacific halibut should monitor IPHC quota utilization and plan procurement accordingly, as frozen product may be the only option during off-season periods.
