Prepared chicken products originating in China are subject to Section 301 tariffs in addition to the standard column 1 duty rate. This additional cost has prompted many importers to shift sourcing toward suppliers in Canada, Mexico, Chile, and South Korea. Importers should confirm the current Section 301 status and applicable product exclusions with a licensed customs broker before finalizing purchase contracts.

CBP generally treats a product as a prepared meal when it contains chicken combined with other ingredients (grains, vegetables, sauces) in a consumer-ready format. Products consisting primarily of processed chicken meat — such as paste, formed patties, or plain cooked chicken pieces — classify under the non-meal lines. The physical form, ingredient composition, and intended end use all factor into the determination.
