The CCSBT Statistical Document is issued specifically for Thunnus maccoyii under the CCSBT trade tracking scheme, while ICCAT's Bluefin Tuna Statistical Document covers Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus). The two are separate instruments from different RFMOs and are not interchangeable. US importers of southern bluefin must present the CCSBT document; presenting an ICCAT document for a southern bluefin shipment would not satisfy the requirement.

Indonesian southern bluefin catches in the Indian Ocean are influenced by seasonal migration patterns, with peak availability generally in the austral summer and autumn months. However, because the product is frozen, supply to the US market can be more evenly distributed across the year than fresh product. Quota exhaustion by major CCSBT member nations later in the calendar year can tighten availability and affect pricing, so forward contracting is common among regular importers.
