Southern bluefin tuna is not currently listed under CITES appendices, so no CITES permit is required. However, CCSBT catch documentation is mandatory, and NOAA enforces SIMP traceability requirements independently. Importers should not assume that absence of a CITES requirement reduces overall documentation obligations.

CCSBT sets annual total allowable catch (TAC) and national allocations, typically reviewed at annual commission meetings. When TAC is reduced or a member country's allocation is cut, available export volume to the US can tighten significantly mid-year. US importers sourcing from Indonesia or Morocco — which hold smaller allocations than Japan — should monitor CCSBT meeting outcomes and build contingency sourcing plans accordingly.
