U.S. Trade with Svalbard and Jan Mayen Island

Svalbard is outside the EU customs territory and the Norwegian VAT area; it has its own customs-free status under the Svalbard Treaty, meaning goods can be imported into Svalbard without standard Norwegian customs duties.

Citizens and companies of all 46 signatory nations to the 1920 Svalbard Treaty have equal rights to engage in commercial activities including mining, fishing, and hunting in Svalbard, subject to Norwegian environmental regulations.

Svalbard's main commercial activities involve coal mining (historically by Russia and Norway), Arctic tourism, and scientific research; Jan Mayen has no significant commercial trade.
