Five-digit codes are useful for mid-level industry benchmarking — comparing a company's product mix against a peer group that is broader than a single six-digit category but narrower than a four-digit sector. They also appear in certain government procurement and regulatory filings where the six-digit level is not required.
NAICS codes describe the activity of US manufacturing establishments and are used for domestic statistical purposes. Import duty treatment is determined by the HTS, which classifies goods by their physical characteristics and function. A single NAICS five-digit group can map to dozens of different HTS subheadings, each with its own duty rate and trade-remedy status.
