North American Industry Classification System
The key distinction is end-use: commercial and service industry machinery is designed for use in service-sector establishments (retail, hospitality, financial services) rather than in goods-manufacturing facilities. This distinction is reflected in both the NAICS classification system and, importantly, in the HTS, where service-sector equipment often falls under different headings than comparable manufacturing machinery.
These products are generally treated as industrial goods for customs purposes and do not trigger mandatory admissibility review by food or drug agencies. However, machines that incorporate currency-handling components, wireless communications, or encryption technology may be subject to FCC equipment authorization requirements or, in some cases, export-control-related import considerations. A customs broker familiar with electronics imports can help navigate these requirements.
