Importers and retailers must disclose the country of origin on point-of-sale labeling. Foodservice accounts are generally exempt from COOL requirements.

While no single certification is legally mandated for import, major US retailers and foodservice buyers commonly require third-party aquaculture certifications such as Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) or Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) to meet sustainability procurement policies. FDA's Seafood HACCP regulations also require importers to verify that foreign suppliers have adequate food-safety controls in place.
