USDA APHIS evaluates the disease status of the exporting country, with African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, and classical swine fever being primary concerns. Import permits and official veterinary health certificates are required, and APHIS may impose additional testing or quarantine depending on origin.

The heading is divided into purebred breeding animals (010310), lighter animals under 50 kg (010391), and heavier animals at 50 kg or more (010392). Within the weight-based subheadings, further lines distinguish immediate-slaughter animals from breeding and other commercial uses.
