Manganese metal (heading 8111) is the refined elemental metal, typically 99%+ purity, used in specialty steel and battery applications. Ferromanganese — an iron-manganese alloy used as a bulk steel additive — is classified in the ferroalloys heading in Chapter 72. Manganese ores and concentrates are classified in Chapter 26. The form and purity of the material determine which chapter applies.
The HS structure at the 6-digit level does not subdivide manganese by form (unwrought, wrought, waste, etc.) the way it does for larger-volume metals like copper or aluminum. The US tariff schedule may add 10-digit statistical breakouts, but at the HS6 level all manganese metal and articles are grouped under 811100. Importers should check the applicable 10-digit HTS line for the specific form being imported.
