Exports Not Elsewhere Classified and Reexports

A domestic export is a US-produced or substantially transformed good shipped abroad. A reexport is a foreign-origin good that was imported into the US and then shipped to another country without substantial transformation. Census Bureau trade statistics report both figures, and the distinction matters for assessing US manufacturing competitiveness versus transshipment activity.

The Census Bureau's end-use classification system assigns goods to categories based on their principal economic use. When a shipment's use cannot be determined, or when it involves non-merchandise transactions, it defaults to the NEC residual. This can occur with mixed-commodity shipments, certain government transfers, or transactions where end-use documentation is incomplete at the time of statistical compilation.
