FDA has issued import alerts for adulterated sesame oil in the past, so importers should request certificates of analysis from accredited labs and consider third-party testing at the port of entry. A licensed customs broker or FDA compliance specialist can advise on current import alert status for specific origins.

At the SITC level, both toasted and untoasted sesame oils fall under the same heading. The toasting process changes the oil's flavor profile and color but does not alter its botanical origin or chemical class in a way that creates a separate trade classification at this level. Buyers should specify 'toasted' or 'untoasted' in purchase contracts and technical specifications, as the two products serve very different culinary applications and carry different price points.
