Crude Rapeseed, Colza, or Mustard Oil

FDA limits erucic acid in edible fats and oils to no more than 2% of total fatty acids. Crude rapeseed oil from traditional high-erucic-acid varieties exceeds this threshold and is restricted to industrial uses (lubricants, plasticizers). Low-erucic-acid canola oil meets the food-use standard. Importers must obtain certificates of analysis confirming erucic acid content to ensure the oil is directed to its appropriate end use.

A certificate of analysis from an accredited laboratory specifying the fatty-acid profile — particularly erucic acid percentage — is the standard supporting document. Some importers also obtain phytosanitary certificates and variety declarations from the exporting country. A licensed customs broker can advise on whether additional FDA prior notice or labeling requirements apply based on the intended use.
