Liquid Elevators

A liquid elevator raises fluid by mechanical conveyance — such as buckets on a chain, an Archimedes screw, or injected air bubbles — rather than by pressure generation through a rotating impeller or reciprocating piston. The classification distinction matters because liquid elevators fall outside the pump headings; if a device uses pressure to move fluid, it is more likely a pump regardless of its commercial name.

Airlift systems that raise water by injecting compressed air into a submerged pipe — common in aquaculture and wastewater treatment — are generally considered liquid elevators rather than pumps, since the motive force is buoyancy rather than mechanical pressure. However, the complete system may include compressors and control equipment that are classified separately, so importers should review each component's classification individually.
