Industrial Gases

Industrial gases are classified under HTS Chapter 28 based on chemical identity, but purity grade — ranging from industrial to high-purity to semiconductor-grade (often 99.9999%+) — determines end-market eligibility. Semiconductor fabs and medical device manufacturers require certified ultra-high-purity grades with strict impurity limits, while steel and welding applications use lower-purity industrial grades. Purity certification from the supplier is essential for both classification accuracy and customer acceptance.

Bulk cryogenic gases require specialized insulated tanker vessels or ISO containers to maintain extremely low temperatures during transit, and the infrastructure for receiving and storing cryogenic liquids at the destination must meet DOT and OSHA standards. For compressed gases in cylinders, DOT cylinder certification and hazmat shipping regulations apply. These logistics barriers mean that most industrial gas supply is regional, with international trade concentrated in gases like helium that have geographically concentrated production.
