Importers should provide a fiber composition certificate from the manufacturer confirming that the dominant fiber is a synthetic staple fiber other than polyester, acrylic, or modacrylic, and that it constitutes 85% or more by weight. If polyester is the dominant fiber at any level, the yarn would instead fall under the 550941/550942 polyester-dominant subheadings or the blended polyester headings (550951–550959). A binding ruling from CBP can provide certainty for recurring shipments.

The HTS distinguishes single yarn (550941) from multiple or cabled yarn (550942), and the two lines can carry different duty rates. The physical construction — whether strands are twisted together — is therefore a classification-relevant fact, not merely a commercial description. Importers should confirm the yarn's construction with the mill and ensure it is accurately declared on the entry.
