Acid treatment (typically with hydrochloric acid) removes the mineral content from raw bones, leaving behind ossein—a collagen-rich intermediate that is the primary feedstock for Type B gelatin production. This processing step is what separates ossein from crude or steamed bones classified elsewhere in heading 0506, and it must be documented in the commercial invoice and technical specifications to support correct classification.

When ossein is destined for food-grade gelatin production, FDA may assert jurisdiction over the material as a food ingredient precursor. For pharmaceutical or nutraceutical applications, additional FDA scrutiny is likely. Importers should clarify the intended end-use with their customs broker and, where applicable, confirm whether a prior notice filing or other FDA notification is required before entry.
