Matsutake grow wild in symbiosis with specific tree species in temperate forests, and British Columbia's Pacific coastal forests produce commercially harvestable quantities that can reach US ports quickly under refrigeration. Japan and Korea are major global consumers of matsutake but are not significant exporters to the US market; Canadian proximity and harvest timing make it the dominant — and often only — fresh source.

The genus Tricholoma (matsutake) can be confused with related species at visual inspection. CBP and FDA may request documentation confirming species identity, particularly for high-value shipments. Importers should ensure supplier invoices and phytosanitary certificates clearly identify the product as Tricholoma matsutake or the applicable accepted species name.
