CDC regulations apply to dogs imported into the US, including vaccination and age requirements; dogs under six months of age face additional restrictions. USDA APHIS may also require health certificates depending on the purpose of importation (commercial breeding, research, or personal pet).

CITES permit requirements are species-specific, not heading-specific. An importer must identify the scientific name of the animal and check whether it appears on CITES Appendix I (commercial trade generally prohibited) or Appendix II (trade allowed with permits).
