The HTS treats mace and nutmeg as distinct commodities because they are different parts of the Myristica fragrans fruit — the aril versus the seed kernel — with different flavor profiles, uses, and market values. Customs classification follows the physical article presented, not its botanical origin.

Mace yields are inherently lower than nutmeg yields per fruit, making supply more limited and seasonal. Indonesia dominates production, so disruptions in Indonesian harvests can have an outsized effect on availability. Importers should also confirm that whole mace is not commingled with nutmeg fragments, which could trigger reclassification.
