Canada hosts major polymetallic sulfide mining operations — particularly in British Columbia, the Yukon, and New Brunswick — that produce lead-zinc-silver concentrates well-suited to US and Canadian smelter specifications. Geographic proximity reduces freight costs, and established commercial relationships with North American smelters reinforce Canada's dominant position. This concentration means US importers have limited alternative sources if Canadian supply is disrupted.

Lead concentrate shipments are typically invoiced on a provisional assay basis, with final metal content determined after smelter sampling. When the final assay differs materially from the provisional, a post-entry amendment (PSC or protest) is required to correct the declared value across the relevant HTS lines. Maintaining clear documentation of both provisional and final assay certificates, along with the purchase contract's payable metal terms, is essential for audit readiness.
