Bituminous coal is the most widely traded coal grade globally, and the US schedule splits it into two commercially significant lines: metallurgical-grade coal (2701120010), used as a coking input in steelmaking, and non-metallurgical (thermal) bituminous coal (2701120050), burned for power generation. The metallurgical versus thermal distinction is critical for classification and pricing, as the two grades serve entirely different end-use industries. Canada is the dominant supplier, with Colombia and Australia also major sources — a supplier mix that reflects both proximity and the deep seaborne thermal coal trade.
