To classify bananas under the certified organic line, the product must be certified under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) or an equivalent foreign program recognized by USDA. Importers must provide a valid organic certificate issued by an accredited certifying agent. Misclassifying conventional bananas as organic to obtain any tariff benefit would constitute a customs violation.

Fresh bananas are subject to USDA APHIS inspection at the port of entry. Shipments must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country's national plant protection organization, and APHIS inspectors may examine consignments for regulated pests such as banana weevil or Fusarium wilt.
