Waste of Artificial Fibers

Fiber identification testing — such as burn testing, solubility testing, or microscopic analysis — can confirm whether waste fiber is cellulosic (artificial) or petrochemical-derived (synthetic). Many customs authorities accept a manufacturer's fiber composition certificate, but when the waste stream is mixed or the origin is uncertain, independent laboratory testing is the most defensible approach. Misclassification between artificial and synthetic fiber waste can result in duty underpayment or overpayment.

Artificial fiber waste is used in the production of specialty papers (where rayon noils improve paper strength), nonwoven fabrics for wipes and hygiene products, and blended recycled yarns for apparel and home textiles. The biodegradable nature of cellulosic fiber waste also makes it attractive to manufacturers seeking to meet recycled-content or compostability claims, particularly in the European and Japanese markets.
