Authentic handwoven tapestries are typically identified by irregularities consistent with hand production, the presence of weft threads that do not extend the full width of the fabric, and documentation from the manufacturer attesting to the hand-weaving process. Machine-woven reproductions, even if visually similar, generally classify under woven fabric or made-up textile headings rather than as tapestries.

Textile articles that qualify as antiques — generally defined as being over 100 years old — may be eligible for duty-free treatment under a separate provision of the US tariff schedule. Importers claiming antique status must be prepared to provide documentation of age, such as provenance records or expert appraisals, and CBP may request additional evidence at the port of entry.
