Wrought Tantalum and Tantalum Articles

Tantalum is one of the four minerals covered by the SEC's conflict-minerals disclosure rules under Dodd-Frank Section 1502, which requires certain US-listed companies to investigate and disclose whether tantalum in their products originated from covered countries in central Africa. While the obligation falls on the downstream manufacturer rather than the importer directly, importers are routinely asked to provide smelter identification and chain-of-custody documentation (such as RMAP-conformant audit reports) to satisfy their customers' compliance programs.

Capacitor-grade tantalum powder is an unwrought or powder form used directly in electrolytic capacitor anodes and classifies separately from wrought tantalum, which has been mechanically worked into sheet, rod, wire, or fabricated articles. The distinction matters because the two forms may carry different duty rates and are used in entirely different manufacturing processes. Importers should obtain a product specification sheet confirming the physical form and manufacturing route to support the correct classification.
