Synthetic Filament Yarn, N.E.S., Multiple (Folded) or Cabled (Bulk)

A folded (or plied) yarn is made by twisting two or more single yarns together in one operation. A cabled yarn is produced by twisting two or more folded yarns together in a subsequent operation, typically in the opposite twist direction to balance the structure. Both constructions fall under SITC 65169, but the distinction matters for technical specifications and end-use performance — cabled yarns generally offer superior roundness and abrasion resistance, which is why they are preferred in demanding industrial applications.

Sewing thread is distinguished by its specific finish (typically silicone or lubricant treatment), its packaging (usually retail spools or cones labeled for sewing), and its construction optimized for needle passage. A multi-ply industrial yarn lacking these characteristics — sold in bulk industrial packages without sewing-thread labeling — should be classifiable under 65169 rather than a sewing thread heading. Retaining the mill's product specification sheet and the commercial invoice description is the standard way to document this distinction for CBP.
