Supported Catalysts (NES)

The classification hierarchy requires first checking whether the active substance is nickel or a precious metal; if neither, the catalyst falls into the NES category. The active substance is defined by the component responsible for catalytic activity, not the carrier. When a catalyst contains multiple active metals, the primary catalytic function and the predominant active component guide classification, and a CBP binding ruling is advisable for novel formulations.

Authorities commonly request a technical data sheet specifying the active metal identity and loading, the carrier material, surface area, and intended reaction. A manufacturer's certificate of composition and, where relevant, a safety data sheet are also standard. This documentation supports both correct tariff classification and any required hazardous-materials declarations during transport.
