Silk Waste (Not Carded or Combed)

Silk waste under this heading includes cocoons that cannot be reeled (pierced, double, or damaged), waste generated during throwing and weaving (yarn ends, broken filaments), and garnetted stock—previously manufactured silk goods that have been mechanically broken down into fiber. All must be in an uncarded, uncombed state to remain in this heading.

Silk waste grades vary significantly by fiber length, cleanliness, and origin. Long-staple waste from throwing operations commands higher prices and is suitable for finer spun silk yarns, while short-staple or heavily contaminated waste is used in coarser blends or non-textile applications such as silk protein extracts. Buyers should specify waste type and grade in contracts, as pricing and end-use suitability differ substantially across grades.
