Knitted or Crocheted Looped Pile Fabrics

Both have loop pile surfaces, but the base construction differs: looped pile knits are formed on a knitting machine (weft or warp knit), while woven terry is produced on a loom with a separate pile warp. The construction method affects drape, stretch, and end-use suitability — knitted looped pile has inherent stretch, making it preferred for fitted bathrobes and activewear, while woven terry is dimensionally stable and preferred for flat toweling.

Key specifications include loop height (in mm), fabric weight (grams per square meter), fiber composition by percentage, loop density (loops per cm²), and whether the fabric has a backing. These parameters affect both end-use performance and customs classification — particularly the distinction from long pile or cut pile constructions — and should be documented on the commercial invoice or a separate mill certificate.
