Dry hides weigh roughly 40–50% less than wet-salted equivalents, reducing freight costs per unit, but they are more susceptible to insect damage and cracking during storage. Tanneries must rehydrate dry hides before processing, adding a soaking step that wet hides skip. Quality grading is also more difficult on dry hides because surface defects are harder to assess before rehydration.

Beyond standard commercial invoice and packing list requirements, importers generally need a veterinary health certificate from the exporting country confirming the hides are free from regulated animal diseases. APHIS may also require an import permit depending on the country of origin. A licensed customs broker familiar with APHIS entry requirements should be consulted to confirm current documentation standards.
