Fluorides, Fluorosilicates, Fluoroaluminates, and Other Complex Fluorine Salts

Both cryolite (natural and synthetic) and aluminum fluoride are consumed as bath additives in Hall-Héroult electrolytic cells to lower the melting point of alumina and improve electrical conductivity. Demand tracks primary aluminum production capacity; smelters typically maintain strategic inventories, so import volumes can fluctuate with production schedules and bath chemistry adjustments.

Many fluoride compounds are listed on the TSCA chemical inventory, and importers must certify compliance — either that the substance is on the TSCA inventory or that it is exempt — on CBP Form 3540 or equivalent. Certain fluorides also carry EPA Reportable Quantity designations under CERCLA, so spill-response planning and SDS documentation should be in order before the shipment arrives.
