Industrial filtration media prioritize wet strength, flow rate, and particle-retention efficiency over ash content, and are typically produced in heavier basis weights. These differences are reflected in price tiers and supplier specialization.

Filter paper that contacts food or beverages—such as coffee filter stock or tea-bag paper—may be subject to FDA food-contact material requirements under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Importers of food-contact filter paper should verify that the product complies with applicable FDA regulations and that suppliers can provide appropriate documentation.
