Liquefied Ethylene, Propylene, Butylene & Butadiene

Butadiene is prone to polymerization and peroxide formation, which can create explosive hazards if not properly inhibited. Marine shipments must include a polymerization inhibitor (typically TBC — tert-butylcatechol) at specified concentrations, and oxygen must be maintained at controlled levels in the vapor space. Importers and logistics providers must verify inhibitor concentration upon arrival and ensure cold-chain or pressure management protocols are maintained throughout the voyage.

Ethylene and propylene are often priced against published contract price indices (such as IHS Markit or ICIS assessments) or linked to naphtha or natural gas feedstock benchmarks. Butadiene pricing is closely tied to the operating rates of steam crackers and the demand cycle of the tire and synthetic rubber industries. Most international trade in these commodities moves under term contracts rather than spot transactions, given the specialized vessel requirements and limited number of qualified carriers.
