Raw dolomite is primarily used as a construction aggregate, agricultural amendment, or steelmaking flux. Calcined dolomite has been heated to drive off carbon dioxide, producing a more reactive material used in refractory applications and as a sintering agent. The calcined form is denser, more caustic, and commands a different price point, so the thermal treatment state must be clearly stated on commercial invoices.

Dolomite and limestone can appear similar visually, so a chemical analysis certificate confirming the magnesium carbonate content is standard practice. Customs may request mill certificates or laboratory assay reports to verify that the material meets the mineralogical definition of dolomite (typically at least 40% MgCO₃ by weight) rather than calcitic limestone.
