Cotton Yarn Waste (Including Thread Waste)

Cotton yarn waste consists of broken or off-cut yarn and thread that has not been subjected to a garnetting (mechanical shredding) process. Garnetted stock, by contrast, is produced by mechanically breaking down woven or knitted fabric or yarn into individual fibers, resulting in a shorter, more mixed fiber length distribution. The two are classified under separate SITC headings (26331 and 26332 respectively), and the production method—not the fiber length alone—determines which applies.

Cotton yarn waste is primarily reprocessed into open-end or ring-spun recycled yarns for use in denim, workwear, and home textiles. Lower-quality waste is used in nonwoven industrial wipes, insulation batting, and as a shoddy filler. The end-use determines the acceptable fiber length and contamination level, so buyers typically specify maximum synthetic fiber content and minimum average fiber length in procurement contracts.
