Indonesia accounts for the overwhelming majority of global clove production, meaning that domestic Indonesian demand — cloves are a key ingredient in kretek cigarettes — directly competes with export availability and can tighten supply rapidly. US importers should monitor Indonesian harvest forecasts and domestic consumption trends, and consider maintaining safety stock or forward contracts to buffer against supply disruptions.
