Most internationally traded BSKP is specified at ISO brightness levels of 88–90% or higher, measured by standardized reflectance testing. Tissue and high-quality printing paper grades often require the upper end of that range, while some packaging or specialty applications accept lower brightness. Brightness stability over time — resistance to reversion — is also a contractual specification for sensitive end uses.

Semibleached pulp has undergone partial bleaching, achieving intermediate brightness levels below fully bleached grades. It retains slightly more residual lignin, which can affect long-term brightness stability. Semibleached grades are used in applications where top-tier whiteness is not required, such as certain packaging or industrial papers, and they typically carry a modest price discount to fully bleached BSKP.
