Wheat bran consists primarily of the outer pericarp layers with relatively low starch content, while sharps (also called middlings or millrun) contain a higher proportion of endosperm particles and therefore carry more starch and energy. Contracts should specify the exact fraction being purchased, as the two are sometimes blended and sold under generic terms, which can affect nutritional value and pricing.

Wheat milling residues may be subject to USDA APHIS phytosanitary review if there is a risk of viable weed seeds or regulated plant pests in the material. Importers should verify whether a phytosanitary certificate is required from the country of origin and consult a licensed customs broker to confirm current admissibility conditions before shipment.
