North American Industry Classification System
Technical textiles are engineered for functional performance in specific applications — geotextiles for civil engineering, filtration fabrics, tire cord, and ballistic materials — rather than for appearance. Their HTS classification often falls outside conventional textile chapters and may be governed by chapter notes referencing end use or material composition, making precise classification more complex than for standard apparel or home textiles.
Nonwoven disposables used in medical or personal protective applications may be subject to FDA oversight if they are classified as medical devices or personal protective equipment. Importers should determine whether their specific product triggers FDA registration or 510(k) clearance requirements before entry, as misclassification of a regulated medical nonwoven as a general textile can result in detention at the port.
