Liquid nitrogen shipments require cryogenic handling equipment and specialized storage at the receiving facility. DOT hazmat regulations apply to both forms, and importers must ensure that container certifications and shipping documentation match the physical state of the product.

Semiconductor fabrication requires ultra-high-purity nitrogen (often 99.9999%+) for wafer processing, equipment purging, and cleanroom environments. Fabs consume nitrogen in very large volumes continuously, and because on-site air-separation units cannot always meet peak demand or purity requirements, imports — particularly from integrated industrial-gas suppliers in Taiwan — supplement domestic production. Capacity expansions in US chip manufacturing are expected to increase domestic nitrogen demand further.
